My I Clarify a Point About Jesus' Genealogy?

Rena Pepe: You should have reviewed rather your rebutal to my, as you suppose, misunderstanding of the matter. If the writer of Matthew is tracing Jesus' genealogy through Joseph just to prove that he was the Messiah when he was not related to Joseph, he was teaching a lie, and Jesus was not the Messiah. Can't you feel hooked here? If the genealogy in Matthew is clearly that of Joseph, and he was writing to prove to the Jews that Jesus was the Messiah, how could Jesus be the Messiah if he was not son of Joseph? Obviously, the author of the Gospel of Matthew did not succeed because the Jews didn't believe in him. Do you get the fallacy here? Then you say that the Jews of Jesus' time looked legally on Jesus as son of Joseph. How about the Gentiles? Luke was a Gentile and he writes about Jesus as being a son of Joseph, doesn't he? (Luke 3:23) You say further that Jesus could never sit upon the throne of David if Joseph was his natural father. Well, did Jesus sit upon the thro! ne of David? It's amazing, isn't it?Look at this one too: "Luke just says that Jesus was 'of Heli.'" I think you tried that one to explain your embarrassment. He says the same thing of all the other ancestors. Does it mean that all those people were not naturally related but through father-son-in-law? Try to read Luke3:23-38 more carefully. You will see that this "of Heli" shredded explanation does not explain anything. If Luke meant to trace Jesus' genealogy by using Mary's ancestors, why would he call Jesus a son of Joseph's? I agree with you that it was a Jewish custom to pass down their inheritance through male descendants. However, let's not forget that Luke was not Jewish. Here is my conclusion about the case: Luke got mixed up when tracing Jesus' genealogy by using Joseph's genealogical line as the author of Matthew did, and you too when you strive to harmonize them. The assumption that they are tracing Jesus' genealogy through Mary, I see only as a naive effort to exp! lain the contradiction between Matthew and Luke. And why do I ! think so? Because Luke offers superb evidences that Mary was of the Tribe of Levi and not of Judah. He says that Mary was of the family of Elizabeth, who was of the family of Aaron the Levite. (Luke 1:5,36)Thus, if we are talking here about Mary, Jesus was not the Messiah. If the thing is about Joseph, Jesus was not God. You have got a dilemma in your hands. Whenever you solve it, let me know....Show more

Marcellus Exler: Besides being 15 generations off I don't recall reading that Joseph ever adopted Jesus.
